Transavia France and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Transavia France
3.6/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Transavia France

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

On 5 December 2022, Air France-KLM concluded an agreement with Total Énergies to supply 800,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to the group's airlines, including Transavia, over a period of ten years starting in 2023. In 2024, SAF accounted for 0.7% of Transavia's fuel consumption, up from 0.5%. The bio-SAF used by Transavia is made from raw materials with the lowest environmental impact, excluding soybean oil and palm oil, to preserve forest areas.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

Transavia France renews its fleet with Airbus A320neo aircraft which are 50% quieter than older aircraft; they use less fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

The airline equips its planes with winglets, wing extensions that improve aerodynamic efficiency, allow faster flights, and reduce their kerosene consumption by 100 tonnes per year per plane. It is a partner of Flywithlucy, which develops electric aircraft for short-haul flights.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

Transavia France, like its parent airline, offers its customers the opportunity to calculate their carbon footprint and offset it by participating in KLM’s CO2ZERO programme. This programme supports reforestation projects.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

Transavia has implemented eco-piloting procedures that improve the accuracy of flight plans, allow for speed adjustments, optimise flight paths and landing configurations. Transavia also uses single-engine taxiing. Finally, Transavia France pilots use flight techniques that reduce noise pollution, such as continuous descent approach.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

Since 2019, Transavia France has eliminated single-use plastic on board, replacing disposable items with alternatives made of wood, kraft paper and bamboo bark. The company’s premises now use eco-cups, reusable water bottles and cutlery. These alternatives are BPA-free, meaning they do not contain substances that are harmful to health. Since 2022, waste sorting for PMC (plastic, metal and cardboard) has also been implemented on board. The airline also regularly cleans its engines, thereby saving 53,000 kg of fuel per year.
