Biodiversity at Caen Airport

Caen Carpiquet Airport, a haven for biodiversity

Caen Carpiquet Airport is home to significant biodiversity. The teams of naturalists from the Aérobiodiversité association, of which the airport has been a member since 2021, visited the site to observe and record data on the flora and bird population, and to find ways to protect and promote them.

3.3/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Caen Carpiquet Airport is accredited at Level 2.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Caen Carpiquet Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Regarding the preservation of biodiversity, Caen Carpiquet Airport uses late mowing on its green spaces around runways, has completely ceased using plant protection products in public areas and limited them in runway areas. Insect hotels have also been created in public areas.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

Caen Carpiquet airport has electrified 70% of its ground vehicles, supporting aircraft operations.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

As part of its responsible energy management, the airport has implemented an early shutdown and a scheduled late start for the terminal's boiler, eliminated heating zones for certain areas and installed timers in toilets to reduce water consumption. Finally, rainwater is being harvested.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

A waste sorting and recycling policy has been put in place, with special treatment for cigarette butts and hazardous waste from airport operations.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

Caen Carpiquet Airport has not installed solar panels or has not disclosed information about this.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

The airport has improved connectivity and access by public transport. A city bus route connects it directly to the SNCF railway station, with a connection in the city centre.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

Caen Carpiquet Airport has no other eco-programmes

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

329 632 passengers passed through Caen Carpiquet Airport in 2025.

Visit Caen and its surroundings

Caen, a thousand-year-old city, is one of Normandy’s major cities. William the Conqueror made it famous even across the Channel, and the 1939-45 war gave it an international dimension. These events left it with an exceptional cultural heritage that shines thanks to the local building material, Caen stone. Book a flight for your trip to Caen and come and discover the Ducal Castle, a fortress perched on a rocky spur overlooking the city and home to two treasures: the Museum of Normandy and the Museum of Fine Arts. Its ramparts and moats now provide popular walking trails. The city boasts an exceptional collection of churches, crowned by the Abbaye-aux-Dames and Abbaye-aux-Hommes. A must-see attraction, the Caen Memorial is undoubtedly still the most comprehensive, the most modern and perhaps also the most moving account of the D-Day landings and the battles. You can book a hotel room nearby now. As an addition to your holiday itinerary, be sure to walk along the beaches of Omaha, Utah, Juno, Gold and Sword and relive history in the famous towns and villages of Sainte-Mère-Eglise, Bayeux, Port en Bessin and Arromanches.
