Airports near Luxembourg

The airport Luxembourg

Luxembourg-Findel Airport is the only airport in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Worldwide, it ranks 25th and fifth among European cargo airports. It has a 4,000-metre-long runway and is located 6 km from the capital. Since its inauguration in 1946, the airport has continued to welcome an increasing number of flights, particularly those for which it serves as a hub. Comprising three terminals (Terminal A, Terminal B and the Business Terminal), it is designed to accommodate up to 3 million passengers comfortably and can handle an average of 700,000 tonnes of freight. The list of destinations continues to grow, as the airport benefits from its status as the only airport in the Grand Duchy. It is easily accessible by motorway and train and has a car park. Its range of services is particularly extensive, from restaurants and shops to meeting rooms. Since 2013, passenger traffic has continued to grow, rising from 2 million to more than 4.5 million travellers in December 2019. Located at the heart of the Euroregion, it is close to 3 European capitals. To develop and expand its air network, the airport relies on the national airline Luxair, which operated more than half of the flights departing from LUX in 2018. The removal in 2024 of European aid for small airports with low traffic should help LUX to develop and reduce competition from nearby airports. The project to transform it into a true Airport City should also enable it to meet growing passenger demand and attract even more traffic.

Luxembourg Airport’s environmental approach

Sustainability initiatives Luxembourg
3.4/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Luxembourg Airport is accredited at Level 4+.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

The airport commits to preserving biodiversity by monitoring ecosystems for each new project and installing beehives on site. It monitors air and soil quality via a pollen monitor for bees and has ceased using glyphosate.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

Since 2024, Luxembourg Airport has used exclusively hydroelectric power. It has also installed smart LEDs with motion sensors and replaced the energy meters for heating and air conditioning.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

The airport establishes a series of specific measures and protocols to manage emergency situations effectively as a preventive measure.
Thanks to these actions, the airport improves wastewater management and recovers de-icing water directly on site to optimise water treatment and prevent pollutant discharge into the environment.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

The airport has implemented a waste-sorting and recycling policy. This policy is certified by the SuperDrecksKescht label, an environmental management system encompassing prevention, preparation for reuse, recycling and any other form of waste recovery, through to its disposal.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

Luxembourg Airport has not installed solar panels or has not disclosed information about this.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

Luxembourg Airport does not have a policy for developing access facilities, or does not provide information about it.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

In 2019, Luxembourg Airport earned one star from the Lean & Green programme for reducing its CO2 emissions by 20% over five years. It implemented a soil conservation and remediation programme, with regular analysis and preventive measures. The airport conducts noise studies and participates in an advisory committee to minimise noise disturbance. It uses a bio-monitoring system to test technologies that reduce atmospheric emissions and raises awareness among staff and passengers of ecological practices.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

4 790 000 passengers passed through Luxembourg Airport in 2025.
