The airport Quimper Bretagne

It is the second airport in the Finistère department, in Brittany, and the 40th busiest in France. Quimper Cornouaille Airport (formerly known as Quimper-Pluguffan) is located 5.5 km southwest of Quimper, in the town of Pluguffan. It has a runway measuring 2,150 metres long and 45 metres wide, equipped with high- and low-intensity lighting systems, all-weather landing capability, and an approach lighting system. Destinations served from Quimper Cornouaille Airport are mainly in France and Europe. In 2014, 100,000 passengers passed through Quimper Cornouaille. The terminal, covering 3,000 square metres, offers numerous amenities. Two car parks are available to travellers, along with a drop-off area. Taxi and bus services provide access to Quimper city centre in half an hour. The airport also has a restaurant and three reputable car rental companies (Hertz, Avis and Europcar).

Quimper Bretagne Airport’s environmental approach

Sustainability initiatives Quimper Bretagne
3.3/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Quimper Bretagne Airport is accredited at Level 2.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Quimper Bretagne Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Quimper Airport is located near a natural area of ecological interest, rich in wildlife and flora (ZNIEFF). There are 26 bird species and a wide variety of flowers and plants. In addition, the airport complies with the recommendations of Bretagne Vivante, an organization dedicated to studying and protecting nature and biodiversity in Brittany, as well as those of Aéro Biodiversité. Finally, the airport is committed to achieving a target of 0% use of plant protection products.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

To reduce its carbon footprint, Quimper Bretagne Airport plans to replace all fossil fuel-powered equipment with electric equipment, including airside equipment, ground vehicles, and staff vehicles travelling between regional airports. In 2018, it introduced an electric airfield tractor.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

The Quimper airport has fully modernised its heating and ventilation system. It has replaced electric heaters with heat pumps and refrigeration systems, and implemented a programmable control system for daily and weekly schedules. Additionally, the terminal building's lighting has been updated to reduce energy consumption. Since 2020, LED lighting has been installed exclusively in the SSLIA hangars and maintenance hangars.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

Quimper Bretagne Airport does not have a waste sorting and recycling policy or does not provide information about it.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

Quimper Bretagne Airport has not installed solar panels or has not disclosed information about this.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

The airport has set up a BreizhGo shuttle service to reach Quimper city centre.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

Air quality is a major factor at the airport. In 2022, it received Level 2 accreditation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) scheme. The airport raises awareness among stakeholders through communication campaigns and signage.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

13 454 passengers passed through Quimper Bretagne Airport in 2025.

Quimper, located on the Odet, is a Breton town designated a City of Art and History. The Bishops’ Palace and Saint Corentin Cathedral, with their tall, slender towers, stand in the heart of the city and form its historic centre. These sites are surrounded by ramparts, and within the ramparts are famous little streets: Kéréon, rue du Frout, rue Fréron, Gradlon or du Guéodet. Charming half-timbered houses create a perfectly preserved medieval setting. Although the city is a port, it is nonetheless a city full of greenery. Book a flight for your trip to Quimper and don’t miss a stroll through the Max Jacob, Prieuré de Locmaria or Retraite gardens.
