On 16 December, the airline Aegean Airways launches its direct flight from Athens to Baghdad. This complements, in particular, the existing air connection to Erbil, the administrative centre of the Kurdish region of northern Iraq. According to Greek minister Giórgos Gerapetrítis, this route will help strengthen the two countries’ economic and cultural ties. Alongside this development in aviation history, Baghdad International Airport is currently undergoing expansion. This air route embodies the ambition of both nations to deepen their cooperation and create new regional opportunities while strengthening connectivity between Europe and the Middle East.

About the airline Aegean Airlines
Aegean Airlines' fleet consists of modern Airbus aircraft, including A320neo and A321neo. The planes feature Economy Class, offering two fare types: GoLight and Flex, as well as a business class. In 2010, the company joined the Star Alliance, expanding its network and partnerships. It serves most major French airports, such as Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, Toulouse, Lille, and Paris CDG. Depending on the season, direct flights are offered to several Greek destinations, including Corfu, Mykonos, or Heraklion in Crete. The airline serves over 150 destinations, primarily in Europe. In 2021, Aegean Airlines signed a codeshare agreement with Volotea, allowing customers to benefit from a wider range of destinations. In 2024, Aegean invested €25 million in Volotea, strengthening their strategic partnership. Aegean Airlines also engages in sustainable development by modernising its fleet to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. In 2024, the airline transported 14 million passengers, solidifying its position as a leader in Greece. These initiatives demonstrate Aegean Airlines' commitment to offering high-quality service while responding to travellers’ evolving needs.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels
The company has used SAF in its operations since 2021, starting with a test flight on an A321neo. It also collaborates with HelleniQ Energy to establish the first programme to use SAF in Greece. AEGEAN uses this type of fuel on flights departing from its Thessaloniki base. In 2022, as part of this collaboration, the airline carried out its first SAF refuelling at Athens International Airport. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are derived from used cooking oil and animal fats, and they enable an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional fuels.
Investment in fleet renewal
In 2022, the airline took delivery of ten new Airbus A320 neo aircraft. These planes are equipped with Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, which enable a 16% reduction in fuel consumption per flight and a decrease in CO2 emissions of 19-23% per passenger seat.
R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft
Carbon offsetting programmes
The airline offsets its emissions as a member of the CORSIA programme. It also participates in the emissions trading systems currently in force in Europe, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
Optimisation of flight operations
Aegean optimises its flight routes notably through Eurocontrol's SESSAR program. It has implemented practices to conserve fuel, especially during takeoff and landing phases, which consume more fuel. It has set up a strict and regular maintenance system and systematically monitors the weight of its aircraft to save fuel in flight.
Other environmental initiatives
Regular awareness campaigns are organised to highlight the importance of recycling and encourage active employee participation in recycling programmes. Additionally, the company has replaced all plastic utensils with bamboo ones. Hazardous waste generated by AEGEAN is stored in a specially designated area and handed over to authorised operators. Furthermore, the company is certified under the ISO 14001 standard, an international voluntary standard aimed at establishing an Environmental Management System.
