Aer Lingus adds a new long-haul route to its schedule with Dublin–Raleigh-Durham, operated by Airbus A321XLR. This aircraft choice, more compact than a wide-body, makes it possible to open transatlantic markets with a capacity better suited to demand. For passengers, this route provides an additional direct connection to the southeastern United States, without a transfer via a major hub. It simplifies travel for holidaymakers and business travelers alike, while strengthening the options available from Dublin. This launch also illustrates how the air network is evolving. Airlines are increasingly relying on next-generation aircraft to offer more flexible connections. At the regional level, the new route supports Raleigh-Durham’s appeal and consolidates Dublin’s role as a European gateway to North America.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels
Aer Lingus, a subsidiary of IAG, has purchased sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for the first time at London Heathrow Airport as part of an agreement between IAG and Phillips 66 Limited in the UK, involving 750 tonnes of SAF produced from used cooking oil. IAG has committed to investing $865 million in the acquisition of SAF. In July 2022, the company signed a contract with Gevo in the US to begin purchasing SAF in 2028 to power flights to Los Angeles, and in August 2022, another agreement was reached with Aemetis for deliveries starting from 2026 to power flights to San Francisco.
Investment in fleet renewal
In 2023, the airline added two new Airbus A320 neo aircraft, offering up to 20% fuel savings and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. It also has 8 Airbus A321 neo aircraft.
R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft
The Airline has six Airbus A321XLR on order. These aircraft use up to 20% less fuel per seat.
Carbon offsetting programmes
The airline offsets its carbon emissions through both the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) for all its European flights.
The airline offers to calculate the carbon footprint of each flight using the Pure Leapfrog calculator. Travellers can then offset this carbon footprint by helping fund environmental projects supported by the program, such as forest protection in Cambodia or Peru or the sustainable development of cookstoves in Darfur. Customers can also choose to split their funding among the three projects.
Optimisation of flight operations
In 2019, it was listed among the top-performing airlines in the UK in the "Fly Quiet and Fly Green" ranking, thanks to the adoption of continuous descent, which contributes to reducing noise and fuel consumption.
Other environmental initiatives
The airline has reduced its waste on board by eliminating single-use plastics and implementing a recycling programme. It has also replaced paper newspapers with digital alternatives. Additionally, it has obtained the IEnvA Registry certification, conforming to the ISO 14001 standard, demonstrating its commitment to the environment. Aer Lingus was also honoured with the Sustainability and Environment Award at the Irish Aviation Industry Awards 2023. The company has been using hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) as an alternative fuel source for land vehicles since 2023. This system allows for a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 90% compared to diesel. It is increasingly using electric vehicles for ground operations and minimizing water and electricity consumption in its offices.
