Air Transat and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Air Transat
3.2/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Air Transat

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

In 2021, the airline signed a long-term purchase agreement with the SAF+ Consortium. The aim of the project is to produce synthetic SAF fuel by capturing industrial CO2 and mixing it with green hydrogen.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

Air Transat has modernised its fleet by reducing the number of aircraft types to two Airbus models: A330s and A321s, including 19 A321LRs, recognised for their energy efficiency. The retirement of old A310s in 2020 allowed a 15% reduction in fuel consumption, as well as a 50% decrease in nitrogen oxide emissions and noise. The airline has also ordered 4 A321XLRs, with deliveries expected between 2025 and 2027, further solidifying its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

The airline uses thrust reversers as little as possible during landing and ensures that the aircraft’s centre of gravity is positioned toward the rear on every flight when loading baggage, rather than toward the front, to optimise the angle of attack during takeoff and thereby reduce fuel consumption. The airline uses software that takes a large number of parameters into account, including weather data, in order to optimise its flight plans.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

Transat reinforces its environmental commitment with a partnership announced in October 2023 with Flash Forest, aiming to restore a forest in Quebec devastated by wildfires by planting over 70,000 trees over three years, as part of the goal to plant 1 billion trees by 2028. In parallel, since 2022, Transat has been gradually replacing plastic utensils and cups with ecological alternatives, in compliance with federal regulations, which will enable the elimination of nearly 12 million plastic cups per year.
