About the airline Austrian Airlines

Its first flight in 1969 had New York as its destination. In 2000, the Austrian airline joined Star Alliance and was acquired by Lufthansa in 2009. Since its acquisition, its loyalty programme has been the same as that used on Lufthansa-operated routes. It allows passengers to earn miles on all the airlines in the group. Today, Austrian Airlines is a major European airline, carrying more than 13 million passengers a year from its base at Vienna Schwechat Airport. It operates a fleet of Boeing, Airbus, and Embraer aircraft. Austrian Airlines serves about fifty countries, primarily in Europe, but also countries in the Middle East, Asia (China, Japan, Thailand, the Seychelles), Africa (Morocco, Algeria), and North America (Canada and the United States).

Austrian Airlines and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Austrian Airlines
3.4/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Austrian Airlines

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

The SAF used by Austrian Airlines is produced solely from biological waste, such as used cooking oils and agricultural residues. The airline has signed an agreement with OMV to participate in the Reoil project, which converts plastic items collected during flights into fuel through a thermolysis process. In 2023, Austrian Airlines consumed 650 tonnes of this SAF. However, this amount accounted for only a very small share (approximately 0.16%) of the airline’s total jet fuel demand.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

The airline continuously invests in modernising its entire fleet. The Boeing 787-9 is up to 20% more fuel-efficient and has superior energy efficiency compared to previous models. The existing fleet is optimised to reduce noise, including through the installation of vortex generators (an aerodynamic device used on aircraft to improve airflow around the wing or fuselage), which are fitted to all Airbus A320 and A321s, significantly reducing noise upon approach.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

The airline is subject to the EU ETS quota system for all its flights in Europe. In 2016, the airline signed the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

The airline also offers its customers the opportunity to contribute to funding the purchase of Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) through an option customers can select during booking. Travellers can also select the “green fares” option, which automatically includes the individual offsetting of emissions associated with the flight in the final ticket price. Austrian Airlines has implemented an environmental management system certified in accordance with the EU’s EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) standard, with annual validation to ensure traceability and measure the company’s environmental efforts. The first validation took place in 2023. The Lufthansa Group, of which Austrian Airlines is a member, has also introduced an option enabling companies to reduce their emissions. In addition to customised packages for the use of SAF, companies can offset their emissions through a combination of SAF and climate protection projects.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

The airline continuously optimises its flight operations. Pilots have powerful digital tools for flight routes and altitudes.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

Austrian Airlines has also introduced a meal pre-order system on board, aimed at reducing waste by preserving unused food. Additionally, thanks to the ReOil project, Austrian Airlines recycles waste on board. Flight attendants collect plastics, which are then transformed into pyrolysis oil by OMV for the production of SAF. In 2023, 5.46 tonnes of plastics were thus recycled.
