The airline also has one of the youngest fleets in the world, with an average age of less than 10 years. It consists of Boeing 777s and Airbus A350s and A330s. In 2014, the Asian airline expanded into the American market and was voted the best airline for three consecutive years. It also operates numerous domestic flights through its regional subsidiary Cathay Dragon.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Cathay Pacific

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

In 2014, Cathay Pacific invested in American company Fulctrum BioEnergy, which produces SAF from municipal waste.

Cathay Pacific has set a goal of using 10% SAF on its flights by 2030. To achieve this, the airline is participating in research projects on SAF with key partners such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Groupe, FAA Centre of Excellence for Alternative Jet Fuels, and Commercial Alternative Aviation Fuels Initiative.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

Cathay Pacific has equipped its fleet with cutting-edge aircraft that are less energy-intensive and plans to add 25 Airbus A321Neo aircraft to its fleet.

In 2021, Cathay Pacific joined the Aviation Climate Taskforce, a non-governmental organisation aimed at supporting the development of breakthrough technologies in the aviation sector, including Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and hydrogen.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

Cathay Pacific uses both regulatory and voluntary carbon offsetting. For the former, the airline participates in the CORSIA, EU ETS and UK ETS programmes. For the latter, Cathay Pacific has developed its own programme, called "Fly Greener," which is Gold Standard-certified and whose supported programmes have a positive social and environmental impact. A few examples include providing energy-efficient cookstoves to families in need in Bangladesh, and providing solar cookstoves and composting equipment to rural communities in China.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.
  • Cathay Pacific has electrified 40% of its ground vehicles. The remaining vehicles still powered by fossil fuels have their CO2 emissions offset through Shell's carbon offsetting programme.
  • The airline uses a Flight Planning System to optimise flight plans based on real-time weather conditions and air traffic.
  • The airline has modernised its infrastructure and optimised its energy consumption by installing solar panels.
  • The airline is reducing single-use plastics and waste, and using recycled products on board (reusable plastic cutlery, napkins made from 70% sugar cane and 30% wood pulp). It also has a food waste management programme.
  • Cathay Pacific is committed to combating wildlife trafficking (ivory, shark fins, trophy hunting, etc.).
