Emirates and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Emirates
3.4/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

Data currently being updated

Average age of the fleet Emirates

This is the average age of all the aircraft currently operated by the airline, and is updated twice a year.
10.3 years

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Emirates

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

In November 2023, it became the first airline in the world to operate a demonstration flight with a Boeing 777-300ER using 100% SAF on a single engine.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2022-2023, the airline received two new Boeing 777-F and also placed an order for five Boeing 777 freighters, worth over $1.7 billion.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

The airline is actively engaged in initiatives aimed at trading emissions quotas and offsetting carbon emissions (ETS). For example, Emirates participates in emission trading systems, including those in the European Union, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. All flights covered by these systems are required to surrender emissions quotas. Additionally, Emirates has committed to implementing the CORSIA regime for international aviation carbon emissions reduction and compensation.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

The airline has implemented engine-cleaning procedures that sanitize internal components while optimizing resource use. The “dry cleaning” method is regularly used to clean aircraft. This approach reduces water consumption while using only a limited quantity of cleaning products, applied with cloths. In addition, Emirates has invested in an advanced flight-planning system designed to forecast and optimize routes by taking weather conditions, airspace constraints, and the aircraft assigned to each sector into account on a daily basis. Upon landing, pilots use reverse thrust at idle and, whenever possible, shut down one engine for taxiing. Finally, the airline has introduced electric vehicles for its ground operations, saving 14 tonnes of CO2 across a total of 2100 monthly journeys.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

Emirates exclusively uses blankets made from recycled plastic bottles. The cutlery and dishes used on board aircraft are also recycled and reused. Additionally, the airline recycles an average of over 500,000 kilograms of plastics and glass from arriving flights in Dubai each year. Emirates' new range of amenity kits is made from washable kraft paper. Stirrers are made of wood and straws are made of paper.
