Iberia and environmental sustainability
Average age of the fleet Iberia
Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Iberia
Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels
In 2011, the airline made its first flight with biofuel in Spain and in November 2021, Iberia made its first flight with SAF produced in Spain from waste.
Investment in fleet renewal
In 2023, the airline ordered 8 new Airbus A321-XLR aircraft to operate long-haul flights. These aircraft emit 30% less CO2. The new aircraft models reduce CO2 emissions by 15 to 30%, are quieter and emit half as much NOx as conventional models.
R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft
Carbon offsetting programmes
The airline allows travellers to calculate the carbon footprint of their flight online.
Optimisation of flight operations
80% of the ground equipment has been renewed and 17% of it is fully electric. Finally, the airline optimises fuel use using catalysts, which reduce emissions from the equipment into the atmosphere.
Other environmental initiatives
The energy consumed in the company's buildings comes from renewable sources, and a power plant for on-site use has also been commissioned. Iberia is part of the "5 through 2025" strategy launched by the International Airlines Group (IAG), aimed at adopting a circular economy model based on the principles of reducing, reusing and recycling waste. In addition, the airline is leading the LIFE Zero Cabin Waste project, which aims to develop a sustainable waste management model focused on recycling. It has already reduced waste on board by 12%, representing 5,000 tonnes per year.
