The Dutch airline is partnering in the launch of a pioneering plant in Delfzijl, in the Netherlands, dedicated to the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This major industrial project enables the airline to secure its future supplies and reduce its fleet's carbon footprint across all its routes. The widespread use of this biofuel in aircraft fuel tanks is KLM's main lever for achieving its climate targets. Unlike fossil-based kerosene, this fuel produced from circular waste will drastically reduce CO2 emissions per passenger. For the airline, this initiative strengthens its image as a leader in sustainable aviation while anticipating future European regulations on fuel-blending quotas. By investing in local production, KLM is optimizing its supply chain and limiting the costs associated with importing alternative energy sources. This domestic production base guarantees greater operational stability for its long-haul flights departing from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Combining technological innovation with environmental responsibility, the airline is preparing its future operations under the banner of an aviation industry undergoing rapid decarbonization.

KLM provides free connectivity on all its European flights

KLM is replacing its Boeing 737-800s with Airbus A321neo aircraft for a cleaner and more modern network.
On 8 December 2025, KLM retired its first Boeing 737-800, initiating a modernisation of its short- and medium-haul fleet with the gradual introduction of Airbus A321neo aircraft.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels
In 2011, the airline operated its first flight using SAF produced from cooking oil. KLM uses SAF today for its flights, with the SAF produced only from feedstocks that do not affect biodiversity. The airline adds 1% of SAF to conventional fuel for each flight departing from Amsterdam-Schiphol airport.
Investment in fleet renewal
KLM is investing in more modern and efficient aircraft, with a significantly reduced environmental impact. In 2021, the airline took delivery of the first of 25 new Embraer 195-E2 aircraft, which emit around 30% less CO2 per passenger and per kilometre, and also welcomed the Airbus A320neo. Finally, the airline replaced the Boeing 747-400 with new Airbus A350F cargo aircraft.
R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft
The Airline invests in research to create the first hydrogen-powered or battery-electric aircraft.
Carbon offsetting programmes
The airline supports several ecological restoration projects in Colombia, Panama, and Uganda. The projects are certified by Gold Standard and the Forest Stewardship Council. Additionally, the airline offers its travellers the opportunity to contribute to the purchase of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) when booking a flight.
Optimisation of flight operations
KLM has a flight-planning computer system that calculates the most fuel-efficient route. In 2020, the airline introduced an adjusted climb procedure for departures and noise reduction. Taxiing with a single engine instead of two became essential to save 700,000 kilograms of fuel per year. Finally, KLM introduced hybrid taxibots on its runways for aircraft pushback, taxiing and towing.
Other environmental initiatives
KLM recycles 14 types of waste on European flights including cardboard, metal, glass, cans and plastic. The company also uses wooden cutlery, and the drinks are poured into reusable glasses.
