LATAM Airlines is accelerating its ecological transition by adopting the AeroShark system across its long-haul fleet. This high-tech adhesive film reproduces the microscopic structure of shark skin to optimise the aircraft's aerodynamics . By reducing air resistance during flight, this innovation makes it possible to save approximately 1% of jet fuel per journey. Maintenance technicians apply these millions of "micro-grooves" to the fuselage and engine nacelles during maintenance stops in the hangar. This modernisation programme covers all ten of the airline's Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Once this deployment is complete, the air carrier expects to save 4,000 tonnes of fuel each year. This technical optimisation also makes it possible to prevent the emission of 12,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, equivalent to numerous transatlantic flights. By harnessing biomimicry, the South American airline is transforming its aircraft into more streamlined and quieter machines. With the integration of the AeroShark system, LATAM Airlines is proving that aviation technology can draw inspiration from the marine world for less polluted skies.

In 2000, the airline joined the Oneworld alliance. From 2001 onward, it expanded its international operations by opening a cargo terminal in Miami and launching new routes to Argentina (Buenos Aires) and the United States (New York). In 2006, LAN introduced its new Premium Business class and expanded its domestic network.
TAM Airlines (Transportes Aéreos Regionais), meanwhile, was founded in 1976 by Rolim Amaro. In 1993, the airline began expanding and launched its TAM Fidelidade loyalty program. The airline then grew by acquiring small local carriers. It subsequently launched its international operations by signing a codeshare agreement with Air France for Paris CDG.
LATAM Airlines is the largest airline in both Brazil and Latin America as a whole. In South America, it is the largest carrier in terms of passenger numbers. Following the merger, it adopted a new logo and new colours. LATAM has two main bases, one at Arturo-Merino-Benítez International Airport and the other at São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport. Investment in fleet renewal
The airline is renewing its fleet and has added latest-generation aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo in 2023. It signed an order to acquire 100 by the end of 2029.
R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft
In collaboration with Lufthansa Group, the airline is investing in the development and implementation of AeroSHARK film, developed by BASF, on its aircraft; the film mimics shark skin to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions. It has tested it on one of its aircraft and will install it on four others.
Carbon offsetting programmes
LATAM has made a company-wide commitment to environmental protection and established several partnerships that enable it not only to acquire carbon offset credits, but also to actively contribute to the conservation and restoration projects associated with those credits. LATAM is committed to complying with applicable forestry regulations and mandatory standards. The company also operates under the CORSIA agreement (the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation).
The airline supports the CO2BIO project, which aims to conserve and restore iconic ecosystems in South America. In addition, LATAM Cargo has developed a carbon emissions calculator and established a framework for collaboration with freight companies to offset their shipments.

Other environmental initiatives
In 2023, the airline was recognized as the best-performing in terms of sustainability in Latin America, according to Standard & Poor's CSA evaluation. That same year, LATAM Cargo won the "Air Cargo Innovation Award" from IATA for its initiatives aimed at reducing plastic use in its freight operations in Chile and Brazil. Additionally, the airline eliminated 1,700 tonnes of single-use plastic from its global activities.
