About the airline Norwegian Air International

Its headquarters are in Dublin, Ireland. Its fleet consists of older Boeing 737 and 787 aircraft. This airline mainly operates regional flights and is therefore not very well known in France, unlike Norwegian Air Shuttle. The Norwegian airline serves 80 destinations, mostly in Europe, but also, since 2016, in the United States, the Middle East and North Africa, and, since late 2017, in Asia, with Bangkok and Singapore. This airline has maintained the same customer-focused policy as Norwegian Air Shuttle and is therefore very highly rated for its quality of customer service.

Norwegian Air International and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Norwegian Air International
4.4/5
Eco-responsible Airline

An airline whose environmental strategy is currently among the most advanced for reducing carbon emissions at source and thereby limiting the carbon footprint of its operations.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Norwegian Air International

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

In 2023, Norwegian entered into a partnership with Norsk e-Fuel to build the first electrofuel production plant (without fossil fuels). The airline can currently source SAF and operate flights using 50% of this fuel.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

The airline has one of the youngest fleets. It regularly acquires new fuel-efficient aircraft. Norwegian operates more fuel-efficient aircraft equipped with the latest quiet-engine technology.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

Since 2022, the airline has partnered with Neste and offers its partner clients the opportunity to reduce their CO2 emissions from business travel by investing in SAF.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

The airline uses a data collection system that provides pilots with real-time information about meteorological conditions. This system enables them to determine the flight altitude and the best moment for descent. On average, 22 kilograms of fuel are saved per flight.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

For 2023, Norwegian committed to eliminating all non-recyclable plastic and reducing single-use plastic on board its flights by 30%. The airline has also applied the circular economy principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling to waste on board and to the management of its facilities.
