About the airline Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways offers over 150 destinations across five continents. Qatar Airways tickets are purchased by 16 million passengers each year. After several failed attempts at partnering with other airlines, Qatar Airways became the thirteenth member of the Oneworld alliance on 29 October 2013. The Airline possesses a modern fleet primarily composed of Airbus A320, A380, A350, and Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777 aircraft. Despite the quality of service, Qatar Airways promotions regularly enable passengers to purchase cheap tickets. In 2017, the Airline successfully launched 11 new destinations and acquired new aircraft. The Qatari Airline has also received the award for World's Best Airline from Skytrax once again. Qatar Airways operates flights from Paris CDG, Geneva, and Brussels. The Airline strives to improve passenger comfort by offering, for example, a new menu in economy class.

Qatar Airways and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Qatar Airways
3.7/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Qatar Airways

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

Qatar Airways is actively committed to promoting the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and low-carbon aviation fuels (LCAF), certified according to sustainability standards recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The company began using SAF in November 2021. In 2024, the company reinforced its commitment by integrating the collective goal of the oneworld alliance and supporting the Clean Skies for Tomorrow declaration, aiming for 10% SAF in fuel volumes by 2030. Qatar Airways has also signed a purchase agreement tied to these initiatives.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

The Qatar Executive fleet has been optimised through an order for Gulfstream G700 aircraft. The delivery process of the Gulfstream G650ER has been standardised. All aircraft delivered in 2021 can be partially powered by sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). In 2024, the company also ordered aircraft, all capable of operating on 100% SAF.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

Qatar Airways offsets its carbon emissions in the compliance market through the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), CORSIA (the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) and the United Kingdom Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) by purchasing CO2 emissions allowances.
The airline also uses voluntary carbon offsetting in partnership with IATA and the company ClimateCare, and offers its passengers the opportunity to offset the carbon impact of their flight by purchasing carbon credits that will be used to fund environmental projects such as the Fantapur Wind Farm Project in India (Madhya Pradesh).

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

In the context of flight planning, Qatar Airways utilises the Turbulence Aware tool, which enables flight dispatchers to visualise in real-time the position, altitude, and intensity of turbulence. By combining this objective data with forecasts, Qatar can improve the efficiency of flight planning, particularly in terms of routing and altitude selection.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

Qatar Airways has improved its in-flight dining experience, Quisine, by increasing the use of recyclable and biodegradable products by 80%. Additionally, in collaboration with Hifz Al Naema, a Qatari charitable organisation, Qatar Airways redistributes uneaten food to local organisations. The airline is also pioneering the "360 Foam Wash" system from General Electric, which reduces water consumption during engine cleaning. Administrative buildings use sensor-equipped taps and recover condensate from air conditioning units for cleaning purposes. By applying circular economy principles, Qatar Airways diverted approximately 3,819 tonnes of waste from landfills during the 2021/2022 fiscal year, sending it to the Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre of the Ministry of Municipalities and Environment.
