Scandinavian Airlines is getting a makeover for its anniversary. The airline is giving an Airbus A330 an exclusive paint scheme featuring the brand’s historic visual identity. This aircraft, serving as the airline’s ambassador on its long-haul network, now operates air connections to major American and Asian cities. SAS is using this event to highlight the comfort of its cabins and its operational reliability. Passengers can already spot this iconic aircraft on the tarmac at major global hubs such as Copenhagen, its main international hub, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. By sporting these traditional colours, SAS honours its heritage while reaffirming its presence in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, connecting Scandinavia to new horizons.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels
In November 2014, the airline’s Boeing 737 made its first flight using a blend of biofuels. Today, the airline consumes 3,000 tonnes of biofuels each year. Additionally, SAS, Vattenfall, Shell, and LanzaTech collaborate on the HySkies project to explore large-scale production of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) in Sweden, utilizing LanzaJet’s "Alcohol to Jet" technology. The company also participates in the green fuel project for Denmark, led by Ørsted, aiming to produce e-fuels for aviation from wind energy.
Investment in fleet renewal
The airline continually invests in newer, more modern, and more fuel-efficient aircraft that are quieter, particularly during take-off. It has one of Europe’s most modern fleets.
R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft
In May 2019, the airline established a partnership with Airbus to pave the way for the widespread use of electric, hybrid and hydrogen technology in commercial aircraft. SAS also collaborated with Heart Aerospace to support the development of electric aircraft. In September 2022, SAS signed a letter of commitment to integrate their new electric ES-30 aircraft into its fleet. In addition, it joined the Nordic Network for Electric Aviation (NEA), an initiative aimed at making electric aviation routes viable and accelerating the adoption of electric aircraft in the Nordic countries.
Carbon offsetting programmes
Since 1 January 2021, SAS has reported its CO2 emissions in accordance with the CORSIA scheme. The airline also prepares
annual reports for the EU ETS, the CH ETS, the UK ETS and CORSIA.
Passengers booking Go Smart or Plus Pro tickets have the option of purchasing approximately 50% biofuel,
based on the average duration of a domestic flight of approximately 60 minutes. This helps reduce CO2 emissions
during flights. Finally, through the Travel Pass Biofuel option, the airline gives frequent business travellers the opportunity
to purchase sustainable fuel. This will be added to the amount contributed by the airline for this flight.
Optimisation of flight operations
Other environmental initiatives
Since 2019, the meals served on board have been packaged in more sustainable packaging (with less plastic), and the cutlery kits have been made of wood. The airline strives to reduce the aircraft’s weight on every flight by optimizing its baggage policy and the placement of baggage within the aircraft. It also works with its suppliers to source lighter equipment (trolleys, trays, seats, etc.). SAS regularly uses a dry-cleaning system on all its aircraft to reduce air resistance in flight and therefore save fuel.
