The airline operates domestic as well as international flights from its two main hubs: Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City and Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi. In January 1956, the North Vietnamese government at the time established Civil Aviation of Vietnam, the forerunner of today’s Vietnam Airlines. The airline adopted its logo, a lotus flower, in 2002. The airline offers around fifty destinations across Asia, Europe and Oceania, including Paris, Jakarta, London and Sydney.

Other environmental initiatives

In 2019, Vietnam Airlines joined the Alliance against Plastic Waste. The airline now uses catering products made from recycled and biodegradable materials. 

In 2023, Vietnam Airlines partnered with the international NGO WWF and Con Dao National Park in Vietnam to preserve this natural marine ecosystem and promote more sustainable tourism. 

In 2023, Vietnam Airlines won the "Boldest Move" award in the Skyteam Sustainable Flight Challenge for its partnership with VietHarvest, which collects the airline's surplus food for redistribution to Vietnamese people in need, helping to combat food waste, hunger and poverty. The airline was also praised for its partnership with the start-up Limloop, which enabled approximately one hundred life jackets to be recycled into bags for the airline's passengers.
