The airport Genève

Switzerland's second-largest airport by size and passenger traffic, Geneva International Airport has operated domestic, European and international flights since 1919. Passenger traffic has grown steadily since 2002, reaching 15 million in 2014. Geneva Airport is one of the main hubs of low-cost airline easyJet, which accounts for no fewer than 40% of the site's activity. The airport has 24,000 m2 of surface area dedicated to freight, including handling areas and cold-storage rooms. Highly accessible, it can be reached via the A1 motorway and Swiss Federal Railways, and offers nearly 6,000 parking spaces spread across different areas. Its service offering is particularly attractive, with a shopping area, several restaurants, financial services and tourist services specific to each destination. Genève Airport’s environmental approach

Sustainability initiatives Genève
3.6/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Genève Airport is accredited at Level 3+.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Geneva Airport, certified by the Fondation Nature et Economie, protects its fauna and flora through regular monitoring. Approximately 135 species of birds and various mammals, amphibians, and insects are observed there. A total of 210 plant species, including 26 rare ones, are recorded. Finally, regular mowing of green spaces is carried out to limit the arrival of invasive species.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

To reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions by more than 60 tonnes, the airport installed 41 power supply points that allow aircraft to plug in while they are parked. Since 2019, every passenger vehicle brought onto the tarmac must be electric.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

Since 2018, Geneva Airport has been certified to ISO 50001 and follows the negaWatt principles to reduce its energy consumption. New buildings and renovations must meet strict energy standards. It also leads the WATTelse project to support the energy transition of airport stakeholders and the Genilac project to ensure that heating and cooling energy is entirely renewable by 2025.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

Geneva airport practises sorting and recycling waste, raises awareness among its partners and staff through workshops and training courses, and provides collection points in public areas and for staff.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

The airport has 13,000 square metres of photovoltaic panels on its site, which it intends to quadruple in the future.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

To travel from the airport, trains, buses and bike-sharing services are available to take you to Geneva city centre.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

Geneva Airport, in partnership with CASPER, uses an interactive platform to monitor noise and aircraft movements. Commercial flights are authorised from 6am to midnight to limit nighttime disturbance. The airport has also implemented a stormwater runoff management system that collects toxic residues, transforming them into biogas for the city of Geneva. Every five years, environmental monitoring shows stability in heavy metal and pollutant levels in soils. The airport is committed to preserving air quality by imposing a landing tax proportional to aircraft pollutant emissions.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

16 482 713 passengers passed through Genève Airport in 2025.
