Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport’s environmental approach

Sustainability initiatives Lyon Saint Exupéry
3.9/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport is accredited at Level 5.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Lyon Airport, home to 74 protected animal species, regularly updates its inventory to assess the impact of its activities. Since 20255, it has implemented a conservation plan for stone-curlews with the Métropole de Lyon and the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux. The airport also works with WWF to protect wildlife and combats the illegal transport of animals by prohibiting the import of animals from foreign countries.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

Lyon Airport is committed to reducing its carbon footprint by installing electrical systems to supply aircraft on the ground, with 64% of aircraft already equipped. Charging stations are also available for vehicles on site. Since June 2025, a green hydrogen refueling station for light-duty vehicles has been operational (the Hympulsion project), thanks to cooperation between VINCI Airports, Airbus and Air Liquide. At the same time, partnerships with H2V and Hy2gen aim to develop local production of synthetic aviation fuel (e-SAF).

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

At Lyon Airport, heating and air conditioning are optimised to minimise their environmental impact. Heat recovery systems have been installed, along with the use of biogas. All lighting is provided by LEDs, and rainwater is collected to supply the toilets.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

The airport has implemented a waste-sorting and recycling policy. Currently, 95% of waste is recovered. By 2030, it aims to implement a zero-waste policy.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

In 2025, Lyon Airport commissioned a solar canopy installation across 15 hectares of its Parking areas, generating renewable energy and reducing its carbon footprint. The installation has an electricity capacity of approximately 25 MWp, of which 20 MWp are fed into the grid to supply neighbouring municipalities, avoiding the emission of 1,600 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The remainder is used for the airport’s operational needs.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

Lyon Airport has launched an Inter-Company Mobility Plan to encourage cycling commutes. Communauté de Communes de l’Est Lyonnais (CCEL) is collaborating with the airport to raise awareness about these initiatives. The transport options include Rhônexpress (30-minute tram shuttle to the city centre), bus routes 47 and 48, and car-sharing services with Leo&Go and E+Share Drivalia.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport has developed a network of forest and agricultural carbon sinks designed to offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in plant biomass and soil. It has implemented a Constas system (Contrôle des Nuisances Sonores et des Trajectoires de l’Aéroport de Saint-Exupéry) capable of continuously measuring air quality. The airport’s residual emissions, which are below 500 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year, are offset through reforestation projects certified under the “Low Carbon” label, in partnership with the Département du Rhône and the Office national des forêts (ONF).

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

9 989 867 passengers passed through Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport in 2025.
