Strasbourg Entzheim Airport’s environmental approach

2.9/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Strasbourg Entzheim Airport is accredited at Level 2.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Strasbourg Entzheim Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Strasbourg Airport, covering 150 hectares, is dedicated to preserving biodiversity with numerous green spaces. Since 2006, beehives have been installed near the rhizosphere to improve pollination. The site uses extensive mowing, allowing vegetation to grow spontaneously, and eco-grazing with goats to maintain spaces without chemicals. The airport monitors and manages invasive species, having replaced plant protection products with ecological solutions, including for treating Japanese knotweed.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

The Strasbourg airport offers two charging stations for electric vehicles in a passenger car park, allowing for simultaneous charging of 4 vehicles. It also plans to create a sustainable cooling network to cool buildings or an urban area.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

Since 2022, Strasbourg Airport has collaborated with ATMO Grand Est to measure air quality every two years and publishes a report after each campaign. It manages stormwater runoff in accordance with the Water Act, ensuring that bathing water quality meets the 1B standard. The airport replaces its lighting with LED lights and has used a natural wastewater treatment station (rhizosphere) since 2006, with external checks to ensure the quality of effluent discharges. Additionally, it employs a building management system to optimise energy and water consumption.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

The Strasbourg airport continues to provide the STEED service for collecting hazardous and non-hazardous waste, billed according to the polluter-pays principle. It also commits to raising awareness among staff and the public about sorting, recycling, and organic waste.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

Strasbourg Entzheim Airport has not installed solar panels or has not disclosed information about this.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

The Strasbourg Airport recommends the Fluo Grand Est shuttle train, which takes you to the city centre in 8 minutes with 5 departures per hour. In 2022, it introduced an electric cargo bike and bike parking spaces near the car parks to promote sustainable travel.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

Strasbourg Entzheim Airport, certified ISO 14001, signed an agreement in 2019 to reduce night-time noise disturbances and those caused by aircraft during take-offs and landings. Aircraft are directed away from the runways after 22:00 thanks to the Noise Information and Monitoring System, which informs the Environmental Advisory Committee on a monthly basis. An annual Symbiose report is also integrated into the airport's environmental report, and the airport is committed to extending the lifespan of terminals and promoting recycling and reconditioning of equipment.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

1 017 989 passengers passed through Strasbourg Entzheim Airport in 2025.
