The airport Toulouse Blagnac

Located 7 km from Toulouse, Toulouse-Blagnac is France’s sixth-largest airport. With a total capacity of 8.5 million passengers, Toulouse Airport welcomed more than 7.5 million travellers in 2014, serving around one hundred destinations. Thanks to the roughly thirty airlines present at the airport, direct flights operate to destinations in Europe, North Africa and North America. Covering an area of 100,000 m², the airport also has 2 terminals, Blagnac 1 and Blagnac 2, the former being reserved for business aviation. Designed to handle regional and international traffic, the second terminal is divided into 4 halls, including a terminal dedicated to low-cost flights and a terminal reserved for regional flights with quick connections. In addition to the 13,000 available parking spaces and extensive transport services, Toulouse-Blagnac Airport also has a business centre and a large number of shops and restaurants.

Toulouse Blagnac Airport’s environmental approach

Sustainability initiatives Toulouse Blagnac
3.7/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Toulouse Blagnac Airport is accredited at Level 4.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Toulouse Blagnac Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Toulouse-Blagnac Airport works with the Aéro Biodiversité association to carry out studies to observe and catalogue the plant and animal species present in its airport meadows. It is home to 370 ha of green space, where 274 plant species and 72 bird species were recorded between 2017 and 2020. The meadows support numerous rodents, which in turn attract many birds of prey. These initiatives form part of a broader strategy to reduce the airport’s ecological footprint. In addition, the airport no longer uses plant protection products, and particular attention is paid to water discharges and runoff with regard to pollutants.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

In collaboration with Electra, Toulouse Blagnac Airport has installed an electric vehicle charging station for the general public. Since 2020, the airport has been working on a project to build a green hydrogen production and distribution station to support airport and logistics operations in central Toulouse. The green hydrogen produced will power the buses and light commercial vehicles operating on the airport site. Finally, since March, the airport has been working with Total to supply SAF. These energy initiatives contribute to the Net Zero roadmap by 2029, which also relies on the electrification of airside vehicles and the exclusive use of renewable electricity.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

For its electricity supply, Toulouse Blagnac Airport relies on hydroelectricity. For its heating systems, the airport is supplied with gas, renewable heat produced from renewable resources, and biomass. This optimised resource management contributes to a 60% reduction in direct emissions (scopes 1 and 2) since 2010.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

Toulouse Blagnac Airport collects and sorts the waste generated by airport users (passengers, businesses, catering services and aircraft) and prioritises material recovery (recycling). Energy recovery is encouraged by incinerating waste and recovering the energy generated. Particular attention is paid to reducing indirect emissions (Scope 3), in cooperation with the airport's partners.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

Since 2018, Toulouse Blagnac Airport has installed solar panels on the roof of Parking T2. In 2022, the annual photovoltaic energy production from this installation covered 86% of Parking T2’s consumption and 6% of the terminal’s consumption. In 2025, the airport installed extensive solar canopies in the EcoParc P5 Parking, capable of producing up to 7.2  MWp. A quarter of the airport’s electricity consumption is now covered by this solar panel installation.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

Toulouse Blagnac Airport provides multimodal access for Travellers, who can reach the airport by tram, bus, carpooling, bicycle... Electric vehicle charging stations have also been made available to airport staff.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

Toulouse Blagnac Airport participates in the European Stargate project (selected by the European Commission as part of the "Green Deal" programme), whose aim is to make aviation and airports more sustainable. In addition, the airport took part in the Occitanie Sustainable Aviation Fuel Forum Initiative (ICEO). The airport has also implemented a noise-reduction policy based on four areas of action: reducing noise at source, land-use planning, low-noise flight procedures, and operational restrictions.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

7 804 980 passengers passed through Toulouse Blagnac Airport in 2025.
