Air Austral is Réunion Island’s historic airline, founded in 1974 to serve the region with flights to Mayotte. Over the years, the airline diversified, gradually adding other international destinations, including Paris, Mauritius, the Seychelles and South Africa. In 2013, it established its subsidiary Ewa Air and became a member of the Alliance Vanille in 2015, with the aim of strengthening its regional connections. Its fleet of 10 aircraft provides both domestic and international coverage. Air Austral has also partnered with airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France and Air India to expand its network.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

Since 2019, Air Austral has used a 2% SAF blend on its flights departing from Paris.

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2019, the airline renewed its fleet and, for example, replaced 2 Boeing 737-800 aircraft and ATR 72-500 aircraft with 3 more efficient and more fuel-efficient Airbus A220-300 aircraft.

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.
