About the airline Air France

In 2000, Air France joined the Sky Team alliance. The French national airline has three main activities: passenger transport, cargo transport and maintenance. Air France owns two-thirds of its fleet and leases the remaining third. Its fleet consists mainly of Airbus A 318, A 319, A 320 and A 321 aircraft. It also operates three subsidiaries: Air France HOP!, Joon and Transavia France. For travel within metropolitan France, to Europe and around the Mediterranean, Air France offers a fare structure comprising 4 options—Basic, Basic +, Smart and Flex—to compete more effectively. In 2019, Air France changed its leadership and policy. It decided to discontinue the Joon subsidiary, which was not profitable enough, and then did the same with Air France Hop. All flights operated by Joon and Hop were taken over under the Air France brand. The airline serves more than 200 destinations in 118 countries.

Air France and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Air France
3.6/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

This is the average age of all the aircraft currently operated by the airline, and is updated twice a year.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Air France

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

Aware that SAF will be the fuel of tomorrow, Air France is taking action. In 2011, it operated its first flight using SAF. Five years later, it introduced flights partly powered by SAF on regional routes such as Toulouse–Paris or Nice–Paris, and has collaborated since 2017 on an Engagement pour la croissance verte (ECV). For its SAF, Air France selects only fuels whose sustainability has been demonstrated and certified by independent, internationally recognised organisations such as the RSB or ISCC+. It has entered into partnerships with Nesté and DG Fuels to support the development, production and availability of sustainable aviation fuels.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2023, Air France welcomed 7 A350-900s, 16 A220-300s, and retired 14 A320s. These aircraft are more fuel-efficient, lighter, and quieter. Other aircraft are planned for delivery in 2025, including 38 Airbus A350s and 60 Airbus A220s.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

Air France-KLM offers its travellers the opportunity to help fund sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) by making a financial contribution when purchasing their air ticket for a flight departing from France.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

Air France trains its pilots in eco-piloting, which aims to identify and implement various techniques during flight and on the ground to reduce fuel consumption. On the ground, pilots prioritise using ground power supplied via a jet bridge rather than the auxiliary power unit (APU). During take-off and landing phases, they also use only one engine out of two. Finally, they utilise tools that enable them to adapt their flight routes to consume as little as possible.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

Air France offers more responsible catering with reduced food waste. The airline, for example, allows travellers to pre-select their hot dish before departure to limit onboard weight and distributes unsold dishes to organisations. It eliminates single-use plastics and recycles packaging. Air France also offers multimodal travel, allowing passengers to combine train and air travel for short journeys, for example on indirect routes such as Rodez–Pointe-à-Pitre. The traveller books the train from Rodez to Paris, then continues by air from Paris.
