American Airlines and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion American Airlines
3.6/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by American Airlines

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

The airline has signed a purchase agreement with Infinium for the supply of eSAF (synthetic sustainable aviation fuel) that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% and is more efficient than currently available SAF on the market. The airline is also a partner in Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, a global programme dedicated to accelerating the development and commercialisation of SAF-related technologies.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

The airline entered into an agreement with Alaska Airlines to purchase 10 Airbus A321neo aircraft. In addition, in 2023, it received 17 Boeing 737 MAX and 4 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

American Airlines has invested in ZeroAvia, a company specializing in the development of hydrogen engines. This investment aims to accelerate innovation in hydrogen propulsion technologies, with the ambition of making regional flights powered by this energy source possible. The airline has concluded a memorandum of understanding with Embraer regarding the Energia aircraft concept, which seeks to utilise electric, hydrogen and hybrid propulsion technologies.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

The airline works with start-up Graphyte, which has created a system that reduces CO2 emissions through a carbon moulding process, eliminating and permanently storing CO2 while using much less energy at a significantly lower cost. American Airlines offers its customers the option to offset their carbon footprint from flights by supporting emission reduction programmes in collaboration with the NGO Cool effect.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

On the ground, pilots taxi the aircraft using a single engine. Operators connect to gate electrical power, thereby avoiding the use of the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit). American Airlines worked with Google Research and Breakthrough Energy to conduct a study using satellite, weather and flight-path data combined with artificial intelligence to improve contrail prevention. Through this research, the airline managed to reduce these contrails by 54%.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

American Airlines is committed to recycling waste generated on board and is exploring solutions that use recycled plastic. Several of its buildings have earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for their sustainability performance. American Airlines’ headquarters is powered entirely by electricity from renewable energy sources. The catering centre at Dallas Airport composts food waste. In 2023, the company was also included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, an index comprising companies that are international leaders in sustainability.
