Nice Côte d'Azur Airport’s environmental approach

Sustainability initiatives Nice Côte d'Azur
3.9/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is accredited at Level 5.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Nice Côte d'Azur Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is committed to preserving biodiversity in the lower Var Valley, a Natura 2000 site, through actions carried out alongside the French League for the Protection of Birds (LPO PACA), the French National Forest Office (Office national des forêts) and local authorities. It also supports reforestation and the planting of local trees, as well as the creation of carbon sinks and facilities that support wildlife and plant life, as part of its environmental initiatives across the airport site.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport has continued reducing its operational emissions by replacing a large part of its service fleet with electric or hybrid vehicles, while its firefighting vehicles remain combustion-powered. Its buildings have been modernised with a tempered-water loop to replace the old gas boilers, and the boarding bridges are powered by 400 Hz to limit the use of aircraft auxiliary power units. The airport has also begun equipping its general aviation parking areas with charging points to make it easier to supply aircraft with decarbonised energy on the ground.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport has introduced a responsible water management policy to limit consumption on the site, particularly by monitoring usage and managing leaks. It relies on electricity from renewable sources. The airport’s facilities and operations also include measures to protect the soil and reduce the impacts associated with airport activities.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport has introduced waste-sorting and separate-collection systems across its facilities and runs awareness campaigns for passengers and staff. It is also taking steps to reduce waste at source, reuse materials and recover waste, with suitable treatment channels for each waste stream.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

Nice Airport operates solar installations at the airport to generate some of its electricity from renewable sources and reduce its carbon footprint. These facilities form part of the airport’s environmental strategy, managed by its operator, Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is served by tram lines 2 and 3, which connect the terminals directly to Nice city centre and the urban network, as well as by several metropolitan and regional bus routes, depending on the destination. Pedestrian paths, cycling access and parking options for bicycles complete the local connections to the terminals. There is no direct rail access: connections are made via Nice-Saint-Augustin station or by urban transport.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is continuing to modernise its operations to limit its environmental impact, with optimised take-off paths designed to reduce fuel consumption and noise over built-up areas, as well as increased electrification of vehicles and airside equipment and measures to control the energy consumption of airport facilities.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

15 229 664 passengers passed through Nice Côte d'Azur Airport in 2025.
