Ryanair and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Ryanair
3.9/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

Data currently being updated

Average age of the fleet Ryanair

This is the average age of all the aircraft currently operated by the airline, and is updated twice a year.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Ryanair

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

In 2023, Ryanair used a blend containing 40% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for all its flights departing from Amsterdam-Schiphol, as part of its partnership with Neste. This use began on 1 April 2023.

In 2024, Ryanair bought 1,000 tonnes of SAF from Shell, to be supplied to its London-Stansted base. The airline also bought 500 tonnes of SAF from OMV in October 2023 as part of its sustainable fuel procurement.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2019, Ryanair began operating its first Boeing 737-8200 “Gamechanger” aircraft. The Airline announced fuel consumption reductions of around 16%, CO₂ emissions reductions of around 40% per seat and noise levels around 40% lower than the 737-800.

In 2021, it continued introducing these more fuel-efficient aircraft across its European network. In 2023, Ryanair received further deliveries of 737-8200 aircraft and continued replacing the oldest aircraft in its fleet. In 2024 and 2025, the Airline confirmed that new 737-8200 aircraft delivered during the year had entered service.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

In 2021, the Ryanair Sustainable Aviation Research Centre began its work at Trinity College Dublin. The research focuses in particular on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and low-emission aircraft propulsion systems.

In 2024, Ryanair confirmed that this research partnership would continue and announced additional funding of €2.5 million, bringing the total announced funding to €4 million. The work was also expanded to study emissions not directly related to CO₂, particularly the formation of contrails.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

In 2020, Ryanair funded environmental projects through its passengers’ voluntary contributions, including an improved cookstove programme in Uganda and a reforestation project in the Monchique region of Portugal.

In 2021, the Airline launched a carbon calculator that enables passengers to estimate the emissions associated with their journey and contribute to offsetting them.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

In 2020, Ryanair continued its eco-piloting procedures to reduce fuel consumption, with optimised approaches and more direct flight paths when traffic allowed. In 2021, the airline maintained these operational practices and increased its use of flight-planning tools to adjust routes and descents.

In 2022, it continued to limit fuel burn through continuous descents and by optimising taxiing. In 2023, Ryanair confirmed the use of ground equipment and single-engine taxiing procedures for certain operations, in order to reduce emissions on departure and arrival. In 2024 and 2025, it retained these measures to reduce fuel consumption in its regular operations.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

In 2020, Ryanair replaced plastic cups with paper cups on its flights, reducing the use of plastic on board. In 2021, the Airline expanded the sorting and recycling of certain cabin waste across its network, with enhanced separate collection at several bases.

In 2022, it continued removing single-use items and maintained food waste reduction practices, particularly by adjusting onboard stock levels. In 2023, Ryanair supported biodiversity projects related to habitat protection and the restoration of natural areas through confirmed local partnerships. In 2024, the Airline continued its recycling and waste reduction initiatives.
