About the airline Singapore Airlines

After its first transcontinental flight to London in the early 1970s, the airline gained a further edge over its competitors by becoming the first to fly a 747. Always committed to improving the quality of the services it offers, Singapore Airlines decided in the late 1980s to modernise the three classes in its offering (Economy, Business and First Class), which ranked it first among the world's best airlines in 2017. Building on its record for the longest nonstop commercial flight on an A340, achieved in 2004, Singapore Airlines offers flights to more than 90 destinations across 35 countries and every continent, thanks to its fleet of A330s, A350s, A380s and Boeing 777s. Singapore Airlines offers 6 options: Eco, Premium Eco, Business, First Class and Suites.

Singapore Airlines and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Singapore Airlines
3.9/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Singapore Airlines

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

Singapore Airlines has been developing its supply chain for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) since 2011, when it joined SAFUG (Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group). As early as 2017, the airline operated its first flights using SAF, in partnership with Swedavia airports in Stockholm and Geneva. Since 2020, flights between Stockholm and Moscow have been operated using a blend of SAF. Since 2021, as part of the Global SAF Declaration (2022) and in partnership with Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Safran, Singapore Airlines is seeking to develop a supply chain for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in Singapore.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.
  • Fleet modernisation with less polluting and quieter aircraft.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

Singapore Airlines relies on regulatory carbon offsetting (CORSIA, EU-ETS, and UK-ETS markets) and voluntary carbon offsetting through its own programme launched in 2022/2023. Thus, the Voluntary Carbon Offsets Program supports forestry projects in Indonesia, renewable energy development in India, and social and economic development in Nepal.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.
  • Singapore Airlines has integrated Environmental Management Systems (EMS) to optimise route planning, flight operations (on the ground, through optimised APU use), and the payload carried on each flight.
  • Optimisation of their buildings' energy consumption and modernisation of their own infrastructure (installation of solar panels...)
  • Limiting the use of plastic on board and using recycled materials.
  • A policy of sorting, recycling, and waste recovery in flight and within Singapore Airlines' infrastructure
