Transavia is rolling out IRIS across its Airbus fleet. The Dutch airline has already equipped six A321s with this satellite communication system. The 13 Airbus aircraft already delivered will also receive the software as part of a retrofit.
The practical benefit for flights is clear. IRIS adds a data link between the cockpit and air traffic control. It complements VHF radio without replacing it. Pilots and air traffic controllers can therefore exchange operational information more quickly.
This technology can help select a more direct route. It also makes it easier to adjust the flight level according to traffic, airspace restrictions or congestion. In the longer term, Transavia aims to have its entire Airbus fleet equipped by the end of October.
For passengers, the impact is indirect but real. Better-optimised journeys can reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. The airline is therefore taking a more efficient approach to its flight operations.
