Wizzair and environmental sustainability

Eco-criterion Wizzair
3.9/5
Eco-conscious airline

Airline committed to an Eco-friendly approach through voluntary actions to offset its carbon emissions and reduce its environmental footprint.

Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Wizzair

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

Wizz Air has invested £5 million in Firefly, a company specialising in biofuels. This investment aims to support the research and development of viable solutions for the production of SAF. In 2023, Wizz Air made its first takeoff from Budapest Airport using a blend containing 37% Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in the form of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™, supplied by MOL Group.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

The airline is gradually replacing its old aircraft with Airbus A321 Neo aircraft, which are more fuel-efficient. Since 2015, it has purchased 20 A320neo. By 2023, the airline plans to continue its efforts and has ordered 110 A321neo equipped with sharklets on their wings, helping to reduce fuel consumption during flight.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

The airline was honoured at the World Finance Sustainability Awards in June 2023 for its commitment to sustainability, for its investments in Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and for researching hydrogen-powered aircraft with Airbus.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

In addition to participating in the Emissions Trading System (ETS), Wizz Air also reports its emissions through the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). The airline funds offsets covering 52% of its total emissions.
In 2020, the airline launched a carbon offsetting programme in collaboration with CHOOSE, giving travellers the opportunity to calculate the environmental impact of their flight and offset their CO2 emissions. Wizz Air also introduced a carbon footprint calculator to enable its customers to support certified offsetting projects.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

After landing, the pilots shut down one of the two engines and use ground power electrical supply to reduce fuel consumption. Additionally, thanks to various projects focused on flight speed and approach, Wizz Air has managed to cut its CO2 emissions by nearly 100,000 tonnes per year.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.

Wizzair replaces paper with digital tablets in the cockpit. Magazines are printed from recycled paper. It has also taken measures to reduce the weight of its aircraft by equipping them with lighter seats and brakes.
