The airport Paris Beauvais

Located around 70 km north of Paris, Paris Beauvais Airport has become a key player in France’s low-cost air travel market over the years. In 2024, it ranked ninth among French airports by passenger numbers, welcoming a record more than 6 million travellers over the course of the year. This strong performance is largely driven by Ryanair’s substantial presence, which accounts for nearly 80% of traffic, as well as the wide range of destinations on offer. The airport serves more than 80 cities across around 30 European countries. It has two multi-purpose terminals, measuring 6,800 m² and 7,950 m² respectively, linked by a covered pedestrian walkway that makes it easier to move between the check-in, security and boarding areas. These facilities are designed to meet passengers’ needs while ensuring smooth operations, even during peak periods. To support its continued growth, operator Bellova launched an ambitious €190 million modernization programme in 2024. The project aims to triple the terminal floor area, build new taxiways, increase parking capacity to nearly 6,500 spaces and raise the number of aircraft stands to 18. Paris Beauvais is also taking a proactive and responsible approach to environmental issues. In 2024, it obtained Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 4 certification. Access to Paris Beauvais is further facilitated by a network of regular official shuttle services connecting the airport directly with several key locations in the capital, including Porte Maillot, La Défense and La Villette. For motorists, the airport can be reached via the A16 motorway, with secure car parks available in the immediate vicinity of the terminals.

Paris Beauvais Airport’s environmental approach

Sustainability initiatives Paris Beauvais

Airports & Travel recognises airports’ positive initiatives to protect the environment. An Eco-criterion rating is displayed as soon as the measures taken to reduce the airport’s environmental footprint demonstrate that it has reached an initial level of environmental commitment, proportionate to the airport’s level of activity.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Paris Beauvais Airport is accredited at Level 2.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Paris Beauvais Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Beauvais Airport is working with Aéro Biodiversité to monitor the wildlife and plant life in the airport’s meadows. Various species, including lizard orchid, pollinating insects, nocturnal birds of prey, as well as hares and foxes, have been recorded. Beehives have also been installed to monitor air quality, which bees are sensitive to.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

Paris Beauvais Airport does not use alternative energy sources or does not provide information about them.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

The Beauvais Airport optimises its energy management in terms of gas, electricity, and water. The heating and cooling systems are improved thanks to air treatment that regulates indoor and outdoor air, thus reducing gas consumption. The airport collects rainwater with two tanks (100 m³ and 50 m³) for use in toilet facilities and by aircraft rescue and firefighting services, saving up to 33% of the water consumed. Additionally, translucent light wells on Terminal 2 reduce artificial lighting needs.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

In 2022, Beauvais airport installed a waste sorting system and has a waste recycling centre. Since March 2024, it has been working with a new service provider to improve the recovery of non-hazardous waste.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

Beauvais Airport has installed 30 square metres of solar panels on the roof of its Terminal 2, allowing it to supply hot water to the washrooms. Additionally, by 2025, the airport plans to install a photovoltaic farm on the roofs of all the Parking facilities.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

Beauvais airport is developing an extensive network of shuttles and direct lines linking the airport with Paris and other surrounding towns and cities.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

Paris Beauvais Airport, as part of its Sustainable Development Plan, implements a noise management programme and monitors air quality to inform local residents and manage spikes in pollution. It aims for carbon neutrality by 2035 through electrifying ground vehicles, providing SAF to airlines, installing solar panels, obtaining level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), and using 100% biofuel-powered coaches. The airport also encourages the development of modern aircraft through its activities and partnerships.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

5 800 000 passengers passed through Paris Beauvais Airport in 2025.
