Nice’s Old Town and Cours Saleya
Start in Nice’s Old Town, then make your way to Cours Saleya to browse the flower market, fruit stalls and local produce. Cross Place Rossetti to see Sainte-Réparate Cathedral and the Baroque façades, then go into Lascaris Palace to see its decorated rooms and monumental staircase. Next, climb up to Castle Hill via the stairs or the lift on the seafront side, as the viewpoint offers a direct view over the Bay of Angels, the port and the rooftops of the old town.
Promenade des Anglais and port
Head to the Promenade des Anglais to walk along the pebble beach, palm trees and blue chairs, then stop in front of the Negresco to admire its Belle Époque façade. Continue towards Albert-Ier Garden and Masséna Square, where the green corridor makes it easy to walk to the centre. Finish at the port of Nice, near the colourful façades and quays, then choose the late afternoon for your walk, when the light starts to fade over the bay.
Cimiez and Nice’s museums
Go up to Cimiez to visit the Matisse Museum, the Cimiez Arenas and the Monastery of Cimiez in succession, as they are all close to one another. The museum displays Matisse’s works in the Villa des Arènes, while the monastery lets you see the cloister and the gardens below. Then head back down towards the Marc Chagall Museum to see its large biblical canvases, then pass by St Nicholas Cathedral, recognisable by its colourful domes and Orthodox decoration.
Niçoise markets and local cuisine
Return to Cours Saleya for lunch at a restaurant in the centre and try a *socca*, *pissaladière*, *pan bagnat* or Swiss chard pie. Also take a detour via Place Garibaldi and the port, where cafés serve simpler food at the end of the day. Look for olives, candied fruit and specialities to take away in the streets of Nice’s Old Town, then keep this area for lunch, as the markets and small eateries are the easiest to reach on foot.
Èze, Mercantour and the islands
From Nice, set off for Èze in the Alpes-Maritimes to visit the hilltop village and exotic garden, then continue towards Mercantour National Park for the Vens Lakes if you enjoy mountain hiking. For a trip out to sea, head to Sainte-Marguerite Island off Cannes, where the Museum of the Sea tells the story of the Man in the Iron Mask and the paths wind between pine trees and coves. If you are staying longer, alternate a coastal outing with a walk at higher altitude to plan a stay in Nice without making unnecessary extra journeys.
