Marseille Provence Airport’s environmental approach

Sustainability initiatives Marseille Provence
3.7/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Marseille Provence Airport is accredited at Level 4.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Marseille Provence Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

The airport is collaborating with the Aix-Marseille metropolitan area as well as the Direction Régionale de l’Environnement, de l’Aménagement et du Logement (DREAL) to preserve the wildlife and plant life on its site. Each year, a cleaning operation is carried out to maintain the natural areas.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

In 2020, Marseille Airport electrified its vehicle fleet, thereby saving 4 tonnes of CO2. It uses a high-capacity 400 Hz electrical power supply to avoid the use of auxiliary power units (APUs) at all aircraft parking stands. Since 2022, 100 electric vehicle charging stations have been installed to support decarbonisation. Since 2024, the airport has also benefited from a direct supply of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) produced locally by TotalEnergies’ La Mède biorefinery from used cooking oils and animal fats. This fuel, used in particular by Air France, can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90% over its entire life cycle, without any technical modifications to the aircraft or infrastructure.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

Marseille Airport has inaugurated a new heating and cooling plant to instantly produce hot and chilled water for heating and air conditioning in its buildings, achieving annual water savings of 8,000 m³. Additional measures include installing flow restrictors and sensor-operated taps in the toilets, as well as a network of irrigation controllers for green spaces that adjust watering according to weather forecasts.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

Since 2019, Marseille Airport has used Suez to manage its waste. It has launched awareness campaigns on waste sorting, introduced incentive pricing, and installed electronic chips on bins to detect anomalies and identify waste.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

The airport has installed photovoltaic canopies on its site, and plans to be supplied with 100% renewable electricity by 2030, thanks to the installation of 40 hectares of photovoltaic panels.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

Marseille Airport is accessible by bus and train. The Bus 91 shuttle links the Saint Charles station to the airport in 25 minutes, with frequent departures. A cable car network is planned to connect the Vitrolles station to the airport in 6 minutes.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

The Marseille Provence Airport has launched a mobility comparison tool for ground-transport options to the airport, providing information on travel time, costs, and carbon footprint. To reduce noise disturbances, the airport collaborates with municipalities and air navigation services in accordance with the Noise Abatement Plan and the Noise Protection Plan, by soundproofing homes, optimising flight paths, and installing noise measurement stations. A tool also allows for identifying aircraft causing noise disturbances to take appropriate measures.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

10 800 254 passengers passed through Marseille Provence Airport in 2025.

Visit Marseille and its surroundings

The Phocaean city dates back to 600 BC. For your holidays in the south, book a flight to Marseille and come and discover France’s oldest city. Water sports are among the must-see attractions here: head to the Vieux-Port and set sail for the Frioul Islands and Château d'If. Along the way, the MuCEM, a museum and masterpiece of modern art, greets the ships and reminds us that this ancient city lives in the present and continues to shine culturally throughout the Mediterranean. Now, look behind you: Notre-Dame de la Garde, which towers over the city, is waiting for you to visit! Next stop: a trip to the calanques, those famous inlets with their otherworldly blue hues. Feeling peckish after all these adventures? Treat yourself to some tapenade, fougasse, or a genuine bouillabaisse at the bottom of Vallon des Auffes. To extend the experience, public transport will take you easily to other treasures: Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, or Arles. Finally, sports enthusiasts will enjoy walks in the hills: Aubagne and Provence more generally, so dear to Marcel Pagnol, are well worth the trip. You can book a hotel room in Marseille or the surrounding region right now, close to one of these destinations.
