Airports near Montpellier

The airport Montpellier Méditerranée

Located in the heart of the Mediterranean region, close to Montpellier city centre, Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport is the 11th airport in France. As the leading airport in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, Montpellier-Méditerranée welcomed more than 1,470,000 commercial passengers in 2019, arriving in particular from other French cities, Europe and Africa. Most of its passenger traffic is concentrated in France—with Paris the most frequently served destination—and in Europe. Covering a total area of 14,000 m², the airport’s sole terminal building is divided into two terminals dedicated to departures and arrivals. With more than 2,000 parking spaces, Montpellier-Méditerranée also offers travellers a range of parking options—short-, medium- and long-term—to suit their needs. The airport’s facilities also include a baby-care room, a duty-free shop, a real-estate advice centre, and several bars and restaurants. In 2019, low-cost airline Transavia France, a subsidiary of the Air France/KLM Group, established a base in Montpellier. This is excellent news for the airport, which adds more destinations every year. In 2020, more than 50 destinations served by direct flights will be available from Montpellier-Méditerranée.

Montpellier Méditerranée Airport’s environmental approach

Sustainability initiatives Montpellier Méditerranée
3.5/5
Eco-conscious airport

An airport with an Eco-friendly approach, demonstrated through voluntary initiatives and participation in recognised programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Montpellier Méditerranée Airport is accredited at Level 3.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Montpellier Méditerranée Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Montpellier Méditerranée Airport is committed to protecting fauna and flora. The airport grounds are divided into two zones: one consisting of meadows and the other, the "Mediterranean salt meadows", which are home to various bird species.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

In July 2025, Montpellier Airport upgraded from two electric vehicle charging stations to 31. This allows it to power its entire ground operations with electricity. The airport also uses LED lighting in new buildings and renovation projects, including in taxiway lights.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

Montpellier Airport is supplied with drinking water by a water treatment plant. Wastewater is treated at the MAERA plant before being discharged. Located above aquifers, the airport treats water that may be contaminated by jet fuel or de-icing products before discharge and reuses it to water green spaces.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

The airport has a policy of sorting and recycling hazardous and non-hazardous waste. 4 sorting zones are available on site, as well as a recycling centre.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

Since 2015, a photovoltaic solar power plant has been operating in the airport’s Parking areas. The canopies cover 1,800 parking spaces.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

The airport is accessible by public transport, bus and tram from the Montpellier metropolitan area.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

The environmental protection organization Atmo Occitanie conducts air quality measurement campaigns at the Montpellier Airport site every 5 years. The airport has introduced an Environmental Code of Good Practice for Air Traffic. This initiative is intended to establish rules for controlling noise and CO2 emissions.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

1 753 427 passengers passed through Montpellier Méditerranée Airport in 2025.
