Toulon Hyères Airport’s environmental approach

An environmentally responsible airport

An airport whose environmental approach, validated by recognised international programmes, constitutes the most advanced strategy for an airport to achieve carbon neutrality.

Assessment based on information provided by the airport

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) label

Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a global certification programme for airports, recognised by international air transport bodies. It assesses and certifies airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their carbon emissions across seven accreditation levels. Its aim is to provide a common framework for active carbon management and enable the airport industry to reduce its energy consumption.

Toulon Hyères Airport is accredited at Level 5.

Aéro biodiversité label

Founded in 2015, the Aéro Biodiversité association identifies, protects and promotes the biodiversity found in green spaces around airports. The Aéro Biodiversité label aims to protect the fauna and flora of this ecosystem through a scientific and participatory approach involving all airport stakeholders.

Toulon Hyères Airport does not hold the Aéro Biodiversité label.

Actions to preserve biodiversity

The green spaces around runways are home to a variety of animal and plant species, often specific to the area. Airports take a number of measures to limit the impact of their activities on the surrounding biodiversity.

Toulon Hyères Airport has installed 3 beehives to measure air quality and has stopped using plant protection products. Additionally, as part of its Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) commitment, the airport sequesters its residual emissions. To achieve this, a reforestation project on a forest plot in Le Lavandou was launched in partnership with Région Sud, Office National des Forêts, Communauté de Communes Méditerranée Portes des Maures, and Commune du Lavandou.

Alternative energy supply

Airports can decarbonise their operations through alternative energy sources by electrifying airside equipment and ground vehicles, providing charging points so that airlines with aircraft on the ground can avoid using the APU (auxiliary power unit), or supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to those airlines.

Toulon Hyères Airport provides airlines operating at the airport with sustainable aviation biofuels. It also supplies aircraft with decarbonised electricity to optimise auxiliary engine use and has installed charging stations for electric vehicles, which are available to passengers.

In addition, 70% of the ground equipment is powered by electricity, and 30% by biofuel.

Responsible natural resource management policy

Airports can limit their direct emissions by optimising their management of the natural resources (such as water, electricity and gas) used to run the airport infrastructure.

Toulon Hyères Airport has replaced its fuel oil boilers with heat pumps, allowing a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions. The terminal and aircraft parking area now have LED lighting systems. Motion sensors have also been installed to optimise lighting management. Finally, the airport measures and limits its water consumption thanks to connected water meters.

Waste sorting and recycling policy

Airports can improve the management of the waste generated by their activities by introducing a policy for sorting and recycling non-hazardous waste (cigarette butts, travellers’ waste) and hazardous waste (engine oil, various pollutants from aircraft).

Toulon Hyères Airport does not have a waste sorting and recycling policy or does not provide information about it.

Installation of solar panels

By installing solar panels, airports can supply themselves with sustainable electricity and optimise the use of their infrastructure.

Photovoltaic panels have recently been installed at P3 Parking and can produce up to 650 MWh/year. A second solar power plant is planned for 2026, covering more than 630 parking spaces.

Development of airport access facilities

Depending on the size of the airport, direct links with the city centre may be developed to optimise passenger flows and reduce car use.

Toulon-Hyères Airport is served by several urban bus routes connecting it with the city centres of Toulon and Hyères, with regular services. A third route connects the airport with Saint-Tropez via the ZOU Lignes d'Azur network.

Other bus routes connect the airport with the Toulon and Hyères train stations.

Other environmental initiatives

Other eco-programmes refer to any other environmental action that the airport implements on its own initiative.

Toulon Hyères Airport is introducing eco-modulation of landing charges linked to carbon emissions in order to encourage airlines to modernise their fleets by purchasing newer, less polluting aircraft.

Annual passenger numbers

An airport’s environmental footprint is proportional to its passenger traffic, as are the measures it can take to reduce it. The Airports & Travel Eco-criterion therefore takes this factor into account.

308 183 passengers passed through Toulon Hyères Airport in 2025.

A Mediterranean port famous for its imposing military vessels, Toulon is a city with many facets. Nature is never far away, with Mount Faron, Cap Sicié and Sainte Baume offering splendid views over the harbour; the peaceful Mourillon district has a village feel. Toulon also has a military side, with the many forts along the coast: Fort Balaguier and the Tour Royale, the colossal gate of the Arsenal dating from the time of Henri IV, and the Naval Museum. Book a flight for your trip to Toulon and come and discover the lovely nearby town of Hyères: take a stroll along the "salt road" and admire the flamingos frolicking there at dusk. Then set sail for the islands of Porquerolles, Le Levant and Port Cros to discover unspoiled nature and dreamlike scenery. The beaches are every bit as beautiful as the finest in Corsica. Then, back on the mainland, admire picturesque villages that are quintessentially Provençal: Le Castellet, Le Pardet, Le Revest or La Garde. So, how about some sunny holidays? Yes? You can book a hotel room in Toulon or the surrounding area right away. And for an aperitif, will it be tapenade? Pastis? Or both?
