Examples of top-performing aircraft operated by Volotea

These are the aircraft listed in the airline’s flight schedule that are recognised for their energy efficiency. Certain technological advancements allow for fuel savings of up to 20% compared with the average fuel consumption of aircraft operating the same type of flights. Using such technology thus reduces planes’ carbon footprint by the same amount.

Investments for the use of sustainable aviation fuels

Some fuels reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle compared with fossil fuels. They are called Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). They can be blended with kerosene in varying quantities. Their large-scale deployment requires significant investment from all stakeholders involved.

In 2022, Volotea signed a sustainable aviation fuel supply agreement with Repsol for its operations in Spain, covering 2,000 tonnes of SAF over a period of two years, with deliveries for flights departing from Bilbao Airport. The airline subsequently continued using SAF in 2023 and 2024 on certain European routes.

In terms of industry and research, Volotea took part in European initiatives to decarbonise aviation and in work related to sustainable fuels, particularly on the industrialisation and acceptance of SAF in regional air transport.

Investment in fleet renewal

Driven by the growing environmental imperative, aircraft coming off production lines are very often more efficient than earlier versions. The same applies to cars. Fleet renewal therefore helps, in this respect, to contain the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2024, Volotea added its first Airbus A320neo to its fleet. The aircraft uses up to 20% less fuel and produces up to 50% less noise than the previous generation. The Airline also continued to renew its fleet with Airbus A319 and Airbus A320 aircraft already operating on its European network for regional and leisure routes.

R&D for a new generation of eco-efficient aircraft

All these investments are for research and development of cutting-edge technologies for tomorrow's aircraft, whether hydrogen-powered, electric or innovatively designed, for the benefit of the environment. This includes funding programmes and partnerships with laboratories and industry partners.

In 2018, Volotea signed an agreement with Airbus to equip part of its fleet with Sharklet winglets, devices designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and fuel consumption. The installation involved Airbus A319 aircraft operated by the Airline.

Carbon offsetting programmes

These are all the programmes in which the airline participates voluntarily or as required to offset its CO2 emissions. The principle is based on purchasing carbon credits that fund environmental programmes reducing the company’s overall footprint. Such carbon credit schemes include the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and CORSIA for international aviation compensation.

Volotea has introduced a voluntary Carbon offset programme when buying a ticket, enabling passengers to add a contribution to fund certified environmental projects, including reforestation and natural habitat protection projects.

Optimisation of flight operations

These are all the actions and investments that enable airlines to optimise their ground and in-flight operations, thereby helping to reduce air transport’s overall energy usage.

Volotea has replaced some of its diesel ground-handling equipment with electric equipment at several airports across its network, working with its ground-handling partners. The airline has also introduced single-engine taxiing procedures whenever operational conditions allow, as well as continuous descent approaches and other flight optimisations designed to reduce fuel consumption. These measures complement flight-planning initiatives and efforts to reduce taxiing times, which depend on the airline, airports, ground services and air traffic control alike.

Other environmental initiatives

All initiatives to preserve the environment are beneficial. Here we list the other environmental actions that the airline has put in place, such as the waste sorting and recycling policy on board, the elimination of single-use plastics and efforts to reduce food waste.
The Airline Volotea has not published any information on this subject.
